What Is Cellulite, Really?

Recognizing the Signs

Cellulite treatment starts with an honest premise: cellulite is a normal structural feature of skin and connective tissue, not a flaw and not evidence that you have done something wrong. It appears when fat lobules in the layer beneath the skin press upward against fibrous bands that anchor the skin to deeper tissue, producing the dimpled, quilted look most often seen on the thighs, buttocks and hips.

When you notice that texture in overhead lighting, after sitting for a while, or when you pinch the skin, you are seeing that architecture rather than extra weight. Cellulite is present in the large majority of women after puberty, including women who are lean, athletic and in excellent health.

Desert Oasis Wellness and Med Spa cares for patients across Lake Havasu City, AZ, serving Havasu Foothills Estates, Desert Hills, the Riviera, Crystal Beach, Parker, Bullhead City, Kingman and the surrounding Mohave County communities. The goal we set with you is realistic: visibly smoother skin texture that is maintained over time, not permanent erasure.

Why Cellulite Happens

Understanding the Root Causes

01The Science

Beneath the surface, strands of connective tissue called septae anchor the skin to deeper layers. In most women these bands run straight up and down, so fat lobules bulge into the spaces between them while the bands hold the surface down.

In most men the same bands run in a criss-cross lattice, which is a large part of why cellulite affects an estimated 80 to 90 percent of women after puberty and comparatively few men.

Age adds a second layer. Dermal collagen thins gradually from the mid twenties onward, so the skin covering those fat lobules becomes less able to conceal them. Circulation and lymphatic drainage in the area also slow, allowing fluid to linger and making dimpling look deeper by the end of the day.

The American Academy of Dermatology is direct about this: no treatment removes cellulite permanently, and the honest goal is improvement in appearance.

That is why the treatments we use work on tissue rather than on the scale. Emtone in Lake Havasu City pairs monopolar radiofrequency with targeted pressure energy to warm the dermis, encourage collagen remodeling and stimulate circulation, while Exion Body combines radiofrequency with targeted ultrasound to firm skin quality across the same areas.

02Deeper Understanding

Skin Quality and Cellulite Grades

How Tissue Changes Alter Texture

Clinicians usually describe cellulite in grades. Grade 0 means no visible dimpling, grade 1 appears only when skin is pinched or compressed, grade 2 is visible while standing, and grade 3 is visible while both standing and lying down. Knowing your grade tells you far more about likely results than a number on the scale does.

Left alone, cellulite often becomes slightly more noticeable over the years, not because it progresses like a disease but because the skin above it thins. Weight loss helps when fat volume is a major contributor, and it can also make dimpling look more obvious if skin laxity increases at the same time. That is worth planning for rather than discovering afterward.

Sequencing matters. Most patients begin with a course of Emtone to address texture, circulation and skin warmth, then add Exion Body when firmness and mild fat volume are also part of the picture. Because improvement is maintained rather than permanent, we build touch-up sessions into the plan from day one.

What Makes Cellulite More Visible?

Several factors decide how noticeable cellulite is on any given body, and most of them have nothing to do with discipline, diet or how hard you train.

  1. 01Connective Tissue StructureVertical fibrous bands anchor the skin while fat pushes up between them, which is the single biggest driver of dimpling.
  2. 02Estrogen and Hormonal ShiftsEstrogen influences fat distribution, connective tissue behavior and blood flow, so dimpling often changes after puberty, pregnancy and menopause.
  3. 03GeneticsSeptae pattern, skin thickness and where your body stores fat are largely inherited, which is why cellulite runs in families.
  4. 04Skin Thinning With AgeCollagen and elastin decline steadily from the mid twenties, leaving thinner skin that conceals the underlying contour less well.
  5. 05Circulation and Fluid RetentionSluggish microcirculation and lymphatic drainage let fluid pool in the tissue, which deepens the appearance of dimples through the day.
  6. 06Body Composition ChangesGaining or losing fat can shift how pronounced dimpling looks, though lean and athletic women commonly have cellulite too.

You May Be Noticing Cellulite If...

Cellulite is not a diagnosis you need to receive, but recognizing how it shows up on your body helps you judge whether Emtone body treatments are worth your time and what to expect from them.

  • Dimpling on Thighs or Hips

You see small depressions across the back or outer thigh, hips or buttocks, most obvious in bright overhead light.

  • Texture Without Weight Change

Your weight has been steady, or you have lost weight, and the dimpled texture has not changed with it.

  • Visible Only When Pinched

The skin looks smooth standing still but shows a mattress-like pattern when you compress or pinch the area.

  • Worse Later in the Day

Dimpling looks deeper by evening or after long periods of sitting, which points to fluid and circulation playing a part.

  • Skin Feels Softer Than It Was

The area feels looser or thinner to the touch than it did a decade ago, and the contour beneath shows through more.

  • Changing Around Hormonal Shifts

You first noticed it, or noticed a change, around puberty, pregnancy or perimenopause rather than after a weight gain.

Your Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually causes cellulite?
Cellulite is caused by the structure of the tissue under your skin, not by fat alone. Vertical connective bands tether the skin down while fat lobules push up between them, creating dimples. Hormones, genetics, skin thickness and circulation all influence how visible the pattern becomes.
Does having cellulite mean I am overweight or out of shape?
No. Cellulite affects the large majority of women after puberty regardless of weight, body fat percentage or fitness level, including athletes and very lean women. It is a normal structural feature of female connective tissue. Weight can change how pronounced it looks, but it is not the cause.
Can cellulite be removed permanently?
No treatment available today eliminates cellulite permanently, and any provider promising that is overstating what the technology does. Radiofrequency-based treatments can visibly soften dimpling and improve skin quality for months at a time. Keeping that improvement means returning for periodic maintenance sessions.
How long before I see a difference?
Most patients notice smoother texture roughly four to eight weeks after starting a course, because the improvement comes from collagen remodeling rather than immediate swelling or shrinkage. Skin often feels firmer sooner than it looks different. Photographs taken at the same angle and lighting are the most reliable way to judge change.
How many sessions will I need, and will I need maintenance?
A typical Emtone course runs four to six sessions scheduled once or twice a week, with Exion Body added when skin firmness is also a goal. After the initial course, most patients return every few months to hold their results. We build that maintenance rhythm into your plan up front so there are no surprises.
Does cellulite treatment hurt, and is there downtime?
Most patients describe these treatments as a warm massage with noticeable vibration, not pain. There is no numbing required and no downtime, so you can drive yourself home and return to work or the gym the same day. Mild warmth or pinkness in the area usually settles within a couple of hours.
When should I talk to a provider about cellulite?
Whenever it bothers you enough to want options, and never because someone told you it should. A consultation is also useful if you are unsure whether you are seeing cellulite, skin laxity or both, since the two respond to different treatments. Call Desert Oasis Wellness and Med Spa at (928) 889-0155 to have your tissue assessed in person.
