What Is Cellenis Derma PRP?

Plasma Proteins, Restructured

Cellenis is a platelet rich plasma system made by Estar Medical. Your blood is drawn into a vacuum-filled glass tube containing an anticoagulant and a patented separator gel, then spun: the gel separates the blood by density, sparing up to 80% of the platelets while removing 99.9% of red blood cells and 95% of granulocytes, the inflammatory white cells.

Derma PRP goes a step further. The platelet-poor plasma, which carries albumin, is processed so the hydrogen bonds inside its protein molecules break, and the proteins then reassemble into a dense, mesh-like scaffold that reabsorbs slowly. That scaffold is what provides volume. It is prepared and used in the same visit, so nothing is stored and nothing is added.

The Cellenis separator carries FDA 510(k) clearance (BK110035, Estar Technologies Ltd, 2012) for platelet and plasma separation. That clearance is for the device and its stated use, so using the plasma as a facial volumizer is off label - the same position as PRP for hair restoration.

Step by Step Process

What You Should Know

Common Side Effects

Swelling, bruising, tenderness and small lumps or firmness at the injection points are expected and usually settle within one to three days, with firmness sometimes taking longer to soften. Because the product comes from your own blood, an allergic reaction to the material itself is not a concern, though the anesthetic or the skin cleanser can still cause one.

Less Common Risks

Infection, prolonged nodules, asymmetry and under- or over-correction are all possible with any injected volumizer. The serious risk shared by every filler is vascular: injecting into or compressing a blood vessel can cause skin necrosis and, very rarely, visual impairment. This is why the anatomy matters more than the product, and why this is performed by a nurse practitioner rather than delegated.

Honest Limits and Regulatory Status

This cannot be reversed. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase; a plasma gel cannot, so it has to be placed conservatively and allowed to settle. Results are softer and slower than a cross-linked filler, and they vary between patients because the starting material is your own plasma.

The Cellenis separator is an FDA 510(k) cleared device for platelet and plasma separation; it is not approved as a dermal filler, and use as a facial volumizer is off label. No guarantees are made about the outcome, and insurance does not cover aesthetic treatment.

How is this different from regular PRP?
Standard PRP is a fluid: concentrated platelets and growth factors, injected to improve skin quality. Derma PRP takes the plasma a step further and restructures its proteins into a dense scaffold that reabsorbs slowly, which is what provides volume. Same blood, same tube, different preparation and a different job.
Can it be dissolved if I do not like it?
No. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase; a plasma gel cannot. That is the main reason it is placed conservatively and reviewed at four to six weeks rather than filled to the final result in one sitting. If reversibility matters to you, an HA filler is the better choice.
How many treatments will I need?
A minimum of two, six to eight weeks apart, then a repeat pair roughly every six to eight months. Judging the result after the first treatment is too early - the volume settles and the skin responds over four to six weeks.
Does it hurt?
There are two parts: a blood draw, which feels like a routine lab draw, and the injections. Topical anesthetic is available, and depending on the area we use a blunt cannula rather than a needle, which most patients find more comfortable.
Can it be used on the scalp?
Yes. The product is suited to facial and scalp areas, and scalp use sits alongside our other hair restoration options. Which one fits depends on your pattern of loss, so it is decided at consultation rather than in advance.
