Melanin and hemoglobin absorb the light as heat, fragmenting pigment and collapsing fine vessels while nearby skin is spared. Spots darken, then flake away. Lumecca packs more energy into the 500 to 600 nm band than older systems, so clearing often takes one to three sessions. The American Academy of Dermatology lists light therapy for redness.

Expect mild redness and a warm, sunburn-like feeling for a few hours up to 24 hours. Treated spots darken and look like coffee grounds for three to seven days before flaking away. Light swelling around the eyes and cheeks is normal on day one, and makeup can usually go back on the next day.

Less Common Reactions

Blistering, crusting, temporary lightening (hypopigmentation) or darkening (hyperpigmentation) can occur, most often when skin is tanned or when settings are too aggressive for the skin type.
